So…you have students that come to you who have taken “pilates” before and gotten hurt…and now you are helping them through “real” pilates. Terrific!
How did they come to you? By their own investigation, I’ll bet. Aren’t you happy that they found you? Aren’t they?

I just took a 2-day workshop ($500 of my hard-earned money) with 39 other pilates teachers with a very well-known rolfer, who, by the way, does not practice pilates. I had to listen to what HE wants “us” to teach…I had to listen, while he stood up on a “soap box” (he actually physically did) to how upset he is because CLIENTS COME TO HIM, who, in his mind, have been “hurt” by “pilates” and various other “political” topics. Maybe that’s why he had only five minutes at the end to get to the psoas.

Please read the bold above. He is upset because….???? Where’s the gratitude? Where is the faith in the process?

What did I get for my $500? A chance to see how new teachers are being manipulated in the name of “safety.” I know for a fact that at least 8 teachers in the room thought the weekend presented nothing new and they aren’t buying his schtick…but they are sweet, respectful, and don’t make noise. They allow. I was heartened to find out that this number of teachers is GROWING and will continue to grow. You don’t hear about them much, because they aren’t on twitter.

I also have faith in the intelligence and discernment of the public to find what they need. Clients find me all the time because of what I do, not because I hang a single that “is NO guarantee of competency.”

FLOW is an important “pilates” concept (or so someone named it as one). I think it’s important that the way we promote is congruent with our practice and what we preach.

1. It may not be the ONLY way, but it may be the most user-friendly, with the best probability of success we have, for the Public, when discerning where to go. If you feel there is a better way-You should promote that! With my 30+ years experience -I believe this is the most logical way.
2. Having background as a Massage Therapist-I totally understand why there are so few PMA-CPTs …it was the same for credentialing for that field in the 1980s,, credentialed Massage Therapists today are the norm- every profession goes through this stage….it’s not at all surprising, it is predictable, and the growth of the ranks of PMA-CPTs is growing and will continue to do so.
3.I love diversity…..I hate when students say:”I tried Pilates -it hurt my back!” and that happens far too often, and more often these days

And the public also has a right to know that there are many, many pilates teachers who know that a 3rd party certification is not the only way, and in fact, there are better ways of recognizing a good teacher.
Instead of taking anyone’s word for it…the public should ask, Why is the percentage of PMA CPTs so small?

I know your heart is in the right place, Laurette. Keep the faith. There is a reason for the diversity. Peace.

1. I am fighting the unqualified fitness teacher/personal trainer/yoga teacher –stressing “unqualified” who go forth into the public market-place peddling their “faux-lates”.
2.The public has a right- to have a way to locate true-Pilates…lots of things feel right to people and they should be empowered to seek out healing modalities that work for them personally, but if they want Pilates they should have a way /system to find that- like when you want a Dentist, Lawyer or Physical Therapist.
3.Not even passing the bar exam guarantees you a great lawyer…but if your lawyer couldn’t pass the bar…you might not be so confident in his ability to represent you.
4. The public has right to know there is a 3rd party-certifying body for Pilates teachers…I have faith in the intelligence and discernment of the public to decide then, whether or not they choose to go to a “Certified” teacher….I intend to continue to educate the public, I don’t consider it heroic – I just like people and want them to enjoy healthy spines and continued zest and pleasure in their daily lives!

With all due respect, Laurette, I’m sorry…where’s the fire? This is 2011. Joan of Arc fought against and was captured by the Burgundians in the 1400s. Who are you fighting exactly?

I’ve practiced pilates for 30 years now…25 teaching and I certainly don’t have my head in the sand, and I don’t need to strike fear into the hearts and minds of new teachers where there should simply be a sense of calm and strength from the practice. It’s worse yet to do that to a paying, unsuspecting public, whom you should be empowering to feel what’s right for themselves.

I know that PMA CPTs agree with me that the Exam (to quote one)”is NO guarantee a teacher is competent.” Just practice your pilates, and keep educating the public. Enough of the heroics already.

Laurette, I could not agree with you more. Just as people should look for an ASE Certified tech when searching for a qualified mechanic they should be seeking out PMA-CPTs when they search for a qualified Pilates teacher (we own a chain of auto repair shops, I can’t help making the parallel!).
